Scene 1: The Underwater Kingdom
(Lights up. The stage is set as a beautiful underwater kingdom. Fish swim around. Ariel is sitting on a rock, looking out at the surface.)
Ariel:
(whispering)
I just love the world above. The sun, the sky, the people... They seem so free.
Flounder:
You’ve said that a thousand times, Ariel. But you’re a mermaid. You can’t go there.
Ariel:
But why not? I want to see what it’s like. I want to be part of it.
Scuttle:
(Swooping in)
Oh, you’re always talking about the surface! It’s just a bunch of humans with big heads and no fins!
Ariel:
It’s more than that. There’s something special up there. I feel it.
Flounder:
You’ll never get to see it unless you do something crazy.
Ariel:
Then I’ll do something crazy. I’m going to find a way.
(She dives down, determined.)
Scene 2: The Witch’s Cave
(The scene changes to a dark cave filled with strange objects. Ursula is sitting on a throne made of coral.)
Ursula:
Ah, the little mermaid comes to me again. What is it this time?
Ariel:
I want legs. I want to walk on land. I want to be with Prince Eric.
Ursula:
(Leaning forward)
You want to become human? That’s a big request. Are you ready to pay the price?
Ariel:
Yes! Whatever it takes.
Ursula:
Very well. I’ll give you legs, but only if you give me your voice. And if you don’t win his heart in three days, you will belong to me forever.
Ariel:
(With a determined look)
I’ll do it.
(Ariel gives her voice to Ursula. She then transforms into a human and walks away.)
Scene 3: The Human World
(Ariel now walks on land. She meets Prince Eric.)
Eric:
Who are you? You look familiar...
Ariel:
I’m... I’m someone new. I just came from the sea.
Eric:
You’re beautiful. Do you have a name?
Ariel:
My name is... (pauses) I don’t remember. I think I lost it.
Eric:
Then let me give you one. How about “Ari”?
Ariel:
(A smile) Ari. I like that.
(They begin to dance.)
Scene 4: The Final Choice
(Days pass. Ariel tries to win Eric’s heart, but he is still searching for the girl who saved him. She doesn’t know how to tell him she is the one.)
Ariel:
(To herself) I can’t speak. I can’t tell him. I have no voice. What am I supposed to do?
Flounder:
Maybe you should just tell him the truth.
Ariel:
But what if he doesn’t believe me?
(Ursula appears.)
Ursula:
You failed, little mermaid. Now you belong to me.
Ariel:
No! I won’t go back!
Ursula:
Then you will die.
(Ariel is about to fall into the water when Prince Eric arrives.)
Eric:
Ari! Wait!
Ariel:
Eric... I can’t speak. I lost my voice.
Eric:
But I know who you are. You were the one who saved me. You are the girl I fell in love with.
Ariel:
You... you remember?
Eric:
Yes. I remember everything.
(They embrace. Ursula disappears in anger.)
Scene 5: The New Beginning
(The stage lights up again. Ariel is back in the sea, but now she has a new life.)
Ariel:
I may have lost my voice, but I found something even greater. Love. And I will always remember the day I chose to follow my heart.
Flounder:
You did it, Ari. You made the right choice.
Scuttle:
And now you can finally be with Prince Eric... or maybe even live on land?
Ariel:
Maybe. Or maybe I’ll just keep exploring the world, both above and below.
(The curtain falls as the music plays.)
