At the beginning of time, chaos gave way to order. The lighter and clearer elements rose to form the heavens, while the heavier and densier ones settled to become the earth. Pan Gu was within this vast expanse, transforming every day with nine changes. He was divine in the heavens and holy on the earth. Each day, the sky grew higher by a zhang, the earth thicker by a zhang, and Pan Gu longer by a zhang. This went on for eighteen thousand years until the heavens were at their highest, the earth at its deepest, and Pan Gu at his longest. Afterward came the Three Sovereigns and Five Emperors.
